The Proposed Route - Couriosities
The route that can be followed, for all travel formulas, and independently with a guide (touring trip) develops fully Madonie Park, the Regional Natural Park which includes fifteen municipalities of the metropolitan city of Palermo in Sicily (Caltavuturo, Castelbuono, Castellana Sicula, Cefalu, Collesano, Geraci Siculo, Gratteri, Isnello, Petralia Soprana, Petralia Sottana, Polizzi Generosa, Pollina, San Mauro Castelverde, Scillato and Sclafani Bagni). The area includes the Madonie mountain range, situated on the northern coast of Sicily, between the course of Imera and Pollina rivers. The park is home to more than half of the Sicilian plant species, and in particular most of those present only in Sicily (such as abies nebrodensis endangered, in the Vallone Madonna degli Angeli). Another endemic species of great interest is the talus Nebrodi (also exclusive of only the Madonie), a shrub-shaped bearing spiny, very similar talus Etna and vegetating above 1200 meters. We still remember the Cupani broom, mountain flax, Sicilian stregonia, the elegant and rare royal fern, heather, the thorny broom, broom, cistus, strawberry trees, holm oak, downy oak, the cork , holly, oak and beech. For the fauna includes more than half of the species of birds, all species of mammals and more than half of invertebrate species in Sicily. As fauna there are foxes, weasels, porcupines, hares, dormice, wild cats, martens, dormice. For birds we can mention the species linked to the bush and the forest: chickadees, titmice, blue tits, tits brunette, nuthatches, red peaks higher, mountain bikers, blackbirds, wrens and even ravens. Noteworthy are also the geological peculiarities. The geology of Madonie is at the center of studies and research since the sixties. Due to the geological interest of mountain chain Madonie 2003 Park Madonie has become part of the European Geopark network whose members are more than twenty geological and non-European parks.
Sites of Interest: During the tour will admire: the Scopalacqua waterfall, San Brancato bridge, the stream Mandarins, rock lily, Cataracts Source, the Cataratti hydroelectric plant, the Rock of Sant'Otiero, the incomplete column devoted to Mother Church of Petralia Sottana, the area of Tufo Gipsi, the baths, the creeks, the Cozzo quarry Dead, underground sites.
